Substack opens podcast sponsorships with dynamic ad insertion
Substack extended its sponsorships program to hosted podcasts on October 21, adding dynamic ad insertion and certified download measurement on top of subscriptions.

Substack opened its sponsorships program to hosted podcasts on October 21, the company said, giving shows on the platform a sponsor revenue lever their subscriptions never provided. The lead feature is dynamic ad insertion, which lets podcasters swap sponsor messages across a back catalog without re-editing a single episode.
Participation stays opt-in. Podcasters choose whether to run sponsorships, which tools to use and which sponsor categories they will accept. They also get IAB Tech Lab certification for download measurement, already live, which gives them industry-standard numbers to pitch brands and report on performance.
The audience sponsors are being sold is the subscription base itself. Substack said its hosted podcasters collectively generate more than $200 million a year from subscriptions alone. Third-party sponsorship marketplaces will soon fill the ad breaks podcasters mark, with volume and sponsor type set by the podcaster, and dynamic ad insertion signups opened as early access.
From the crate: Substack, a new sponsor lane for podcasters is welcome — keep it opt-in, and let the podcaster set the categories and the volume, as you have started.
